I. Subgrade Preparation: Level, Firm, and Free of Sharp Objects and Debris
Prior to construction, the working surface must undergo precise leveling. Thoroughly remove all weeds, tree roots, sharp stones, and loose soil to ensure the ground surface is free of any protrusions or voids. Weak foundations require compaction or reinforcement using a lime-soil mixture (typically a 3:7 ratio); where necessary, a geotextile cushion layer should be installed. Ditches and slopes must be graded to match the designed gradient; a slope ratio between 1:1.5 and 1:3 is recommended to ensure efficient drainage and foundation stability. Direct installation over sharp debris or uneven ground is strictly prohibited to prevent puncturing of the mat material or uneven stress distribution.
II. Cutting and Laying: Smooth Unrolling and Standardized Overlapping
Precise Cutting: Cut the material according to on-site dimensions, allowing for a 5% shrinkage margin, and reserve an additional 10–20 cm overlap width at the seams. Cutting should be performed while the material is dry, ensuring the cut edges are straight and free of burrs.
Laying Direction: Unroll the material down the slope, proceeding from top to bottom. Ensure the mat surface remains naturally extended—free of wrinkles or folds—and avoid forceful stretching. For river and ditch projects, the material must be laid in the direction of water flow, with the upstream section overlapping and pressing down upon the downstream section.
III. Water-Activated Curing: Sufficient, Uniform, and Scientific Hydration
Water application is the critical step that determines the final strength of the material:
Water Volume Standard: Apply no less than 9 kg of clean water per square meter (for a 10 mm thick mat).
Application Method: Use a low-pressure spray system to apply water uniformly, working from the edges toward the center of the mat. High-pressure direct jets are strictly prohibited. Curing Time: Achieves 80% of full strength within 24 hours at room temperature; fully cured after 72 hours.
Water Requirements: Clean fresh water must be used; wastewater or saline water will compromise curing quality.
IV. Curing and Maintenance: Maintain Temperature and Humidity; Strictly Avoid Disturbance
Initial Protection: For 7 days following curing, strictly prohibit foot traffic, heavy loading, or exposure to rushing water.
Temperature and Humidity Control:
High Temperatures (>30°C): Increase the frequency of water spraying and cover with shading materials to prevent drying and cracking.
Low Temperatures (≤5°C): Cover with thermal insulation film to prevent freezing and material failure.
Damage Repair: If voids or holes are discovered, immediately repair them using a patch made of the same material combined with a sealant.
V. Important Prohibitions and Warnings
Do not perform outdoor construction during rainy weather; exposure to water before curing is complete will result in material failure.
Ensure uniform water distribution; insufficient water in localized areas will result in incomplete curing (a “raw” core) and compromised strength.
Do not bend the material while in a dry state, as this can easily cause internal fiber breakage.
